Why We Did This? Reimagining Tic Tac Toe the Whimsy Way

At Whimsy, we often start with a simple question: what did joy look like before convenience took over? This tic tac toe set was born from that question—out of nostalgia, sustainability, and a deep love for objects that feel personal, warm, and timeless.
Long before plastic boards and factory-made toys, Indian indoor games were created from what was readily available in nature. Play was intuitive, tactile, and deeply rooted in the environment around us. Games weren’t bought—they were made.
Children played with stones, pebbles, shells, wood, clay, seeds, glass bangles, and chalk lines drawn on floors. These materials carried textures, weight, and imperfections—making every game slightly different, slightly more human. The act of playing was also an act of connecting with nature.
That philosophy stayed with us.
Why Tic Tac Toe?
Tic tac toe is universal. It crosses ages, cultures, and languages. Almost everyone has played it—on paper, on school desks, in the margins of notebooks. We wanted to take this familiar game and bring it closer to how games once felt: slow, tactile, and intentional.
So instead of screens or plastic grids, we asked—what if tic tac toe felt like it came from the earth?
Natural Materials, Thoughtful Design
Our tic tac toe set is handcrafted using jute, pebbles, and clay—materials that are natural, sustainable, and grounding to touch. No plastic. No excess. Just honest materials that age beautifully.
Jute forms the base—soft, foldable, and easy to carry
Pebbles & clay characters replace flat tokens, giving weight and texture
Each piece is handcrafted, making every set slightly unique
The characters are playful and expressive, giving the game a personality of its own—something that invites conversation even when it’s not being played.
Designed to Travel, Meant to Stay
This set is:
Easy to carry for travel, picnics, cafés, or quiet evenings
A thoughtful gifting object for adults and children alike
A decorative piece that sits beautifully on coffee tables or shelves
It’s a game, yes—but also a keepsake. Something you don’t tuck away in a drawer.
Bringing the Past Into the Present
By blending a game everyone knows with materials we once used instinctively, this tic tac toe set becomes a small act of resistance—to waste, to forgetfulness, to disposability.
We didn’t design this just to play.We designed it to feel—natural, nostalgic, and full of quiet joy.
That’s why we did this.
